Balabagan Mayor Edna Ogka Benito shares the
limelights of governance in a meeting of the Local Development Council last
November 21. (Anne Acosta)
BALABAGAN, Lanao del Sur--- In presiding over
the Local Development Council (LDC) meeting here at the Municipal Hall Building
last November 21, Mayor Edna Ogka Benito reiterated the power point of unity
and solidarity among government departments and partner agencies, barangay
governments, and the various sectors or stakeholders in further sustaining the
fruits of development efforts through local governance and initiatives.
This she asserted at a time when the
municipal government of Balabagan, during her term or administration, was
awarded its first Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) 2019, an incentive and
award-program of the Department of the Interior and Local Government to push
local government units to excel in performance levels and put more impetus to
the delivery of basic services to the constituents.
Of the
40 municipalities in Lanao del Sur, eight LGUs made it to the award system this
year with awarding night held last
November 5 at the Manila Hotel.
Many
LGUs in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM),
Balabagan as among them, made limelight
for achieving the SGLG feats this year, a better showing compared to other
regions in Mindanao and those in Visayas and Luzon.
Mayor
Benito said “we owe this SGLG award to all of you,” adding that the municipal
government is also an awardee for Child Friendly Local Governance in the BARMM for 2019, a recognition given by the
Ministry of the Interior and Local Government whose award rites was held last
November 4 at the Shariff Kabunsuan Complex in Cotabato City.
In
spite of the graft cases filed against
her during her incumbency as mayor which resulted to suspension in office, the
mayor said these have not deterred her to perform the mandate as an elected
official and this further motivated me to move on… “and one more case left for
decision by the Sandigan Bayan.”
During
those periods of suspension, the mayor said she kept track of the affairs of
the local government through monitoring and reportage of her son, Vice Mayor
Jover Ogka Benito, who served as OIC-mayor… “so the continuity of work is
there.”
She
urged the stakeholders to imbibe the value of people-oriented service through
work performance befitting one’s position in the government or the organization
one works with or serves “so we can achieve the heights of our aspirations as a
people and community though simple contribution it could be as long as it is
for service of the people.”
In that
LDC meeting, the mayor informed the body about the population census in 2020
which the Philippine Statistics Authority conducts every five years.
She
said the result of the census is important in resource development and crafting
of development agenda based on population needs and requirements.
The
mayor called on the stakeholders to share their resources or assistance in the
conduct of the census. (Anne Acosta)
