COTABATO CITY --- This city
government steps up the celebration of the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival 2017 with
a theatre play that will portray the arrival of Johorian missionary Shariff Kabunsuan
to the island of Mindanao to spread the religion of Islam.
This play will
feature the talented young Cotabateños who underwent an audition sometime last September.
This activity is made possible through the initiative of the city’s Tourism
Promotion Board (TPB), with the support of the city government of Cotabato.
The play will be
entitled “The Coming.”
Datu Omar Sharief Patadon,
TPB Board of Director on socio-cultural committee and director of the theatre
play, said “The Coming” is set to take place on December 16, 2017 to be held at
the Shariff Kabunsuan Complex, just in time during the observance of festival.
“The TPB was
tasked by the city government of Cotabato to be the specific in-charge of this
significant activity,” Patadon said.
Patadon added that
“it is not a usual play, but a musical play with a touch of artistry in it.”
“The play will
feature the rich culture --- heritage, traditions, and values --- of our
forefathers during the era,” Patadon said.
Bai Sandra Siang,
TPB executive chair, said that ever since, the TPB has been doing various
activities to encourage, promote, and develop tourism as a major socio-economic
activity of Cotabato City.
“We are more than
excited since the whole production is composed of pure talents from our city.
Be it from the talents, musical compositions among others are all new to hear.
Now, we are ready to showcase the pure talent and artistry of Cotabateños,”
Siang said.
Shariff Kabunsuan
Festival commemorates the arrival during the 16th Century of Arab missionary
Shariff Kabunsuan from Johore to spread Islam among the natives.
History had it
that he was on board a colorful ship which landed along the banks of Rio Grande
de Mindanao (formerly the MaslaPulangi), the incident of which will be
highlighted in a Fluvial Parade of that ship’s replicas during the festival.
Shariff Kabunsuan’s
spread of Islam led to the establishment of the Sultanates of Maguindanao,
Kabuntalan, and Rajah Buayan (which now includes General Santos City and the provinces
of Sarangani and South Cotabato).
Mayor Frances
Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi said the theatre play simply reflects the aspirations of
the people and the local artists of Cotabato City. More than the story that the
theatre play will showcase, it is also a proof of the outstanding talents of
young Cotabateños.
“The play is
actually both educational and entertaining as we are being reminded of the rich
history that started in our place. This is an opportunity for us to spread
awareness of our culture and also to teach our young ones not to forget where
we, as a people came from,” the mayor said.
Along with the
theatre play is also a list of other exciting activities that Cotabateños and
the visitors of Cotabato City will be able to enjoy during the celebration of
the festival.
Staple activities
like the Kuyog Festival, Pagana, and the culinary contest are already
scheduled.
The Shariff Kabunsuan
Bazaar will also be open to the public. Both food and non food items will be
displayed here.
The Banggala Fashion
Fair which was launched last year is also expected to draw crowds as it will
showcase the different Muslim attires that are being sold by local
entrepreneurs in the city.(GILMHAR A.
